Kurds have no friends but the mountains

The mountains of the Kurdistan Region have an average height of about 2,400 metres, rising to 3,000–3,300 metres in places. The highest peak, Halgurd, is near the border with Iran and measures 3,660 metres. The highest mountain ridges contain the only forestland in the Region.

Kurdistan roughly encompasses the northwestern Zagros and the eastern aurus mountain ranges. Contemporary use of the term refers to the following areas: southeastern Turkey orthern  Kurdistan, northern Iraq (Southern Kurdistan), northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan) and northern Syria (Rojava or Western Kurdistan).

Mountaineering is one of the activities that has had its fans since ancient times and many people have been able to raise their nation’s flag on the highest peaks of the world through this sport. Kurdistan is a mountainous country and the past life of the Kurdish people was mostly in the mountains the mountains were the refuge and the true symbol of resistance of this nation to achieve its goals History has been bitter for this nation and it has not had the opportunity to fulfill many of its dreams in terms of sports. Kurdistan Mountaineering Federation strives to introduce and develop mountaineering sports and encourage the people of Kurdistan in general and youth, in particular, to turn to this sport for the sake of a healthy individual mentally and physically, as well as introduce the nature and mountains of Kurdistan to the world. The Kurdistan Mountaineering Federation took its first steps in 2005 and officially started its work on 12/2/2006 by the administrative order of the Council of Ministers and the High Council of Sports.
